Superseding Skill

Organizations planning to pursue digital transformation often have a team of highly skilled members they intend to rely on for cross-functional knowledge requirements. However, it’s important to note that having the necessary knowledge should not be an exclusive requirement for building an effective digital transformation team. Generally, a mix of styles, traits, and experience fosters mutual appreciation, and can lead to greater project success.

Build your dream digital transformation team by keeping these 5 things in mind: curiosity is coveted, details do matter, communication is key, start from the top, and preparation is paramount.

Curiosity Is Coveted

Curious team members seek new information, ideas, and perspectives. As a result, they are more likely to engage in open and honest communications. They will incorporate the use of “why,” “what if,” and “why not” to spark brainstorming and problem-solving discussions. This behavior builds both trust and a shared understanding across the digital transformation team.

Details Do Matter

Detail-oriented team members are adept at identifying areas where processes can be improved and streamlined while anticipating potential issues. They tend to be proficient in task delegation by assigning the right individuals with the right skills, ensuring execution is efficient. This oversight contributes to effective planning, ensures thoroughness, and provides a transparent view of required work.

Communication Is Key

By promoting mutual understanding of roles, responsibilities, and expectations, effective communication reduces the likelihood of misunderstandings or confusion among team members. Furthermore, good communication cultivates a positive team dynamic that boosts motivation, engagement, and job satisfaction.

Keep in mind the time commitment required for all members of the digital transformation team. Consideration should also be given to fluctuating time allocations. It is generally unrealistic for people to be actively involved in multiple projects or other unrelated duties. It is better to overestimate the time needed than to underestimate the commitment.

To demonstrate commitment to a project, an organization must ensure that other initiatives do not take precedence. If the project cannot be made the top priority now, it may be better to delay it until a later date when such a commitment can be secured.

Start from the Top

Complete the digital transformation team by providing an incredible team leader and executive support. Fostering and modeling valued behaviors are essential as well. To further demonstrate commitment to the team and the project, some planned activities should set everyone up for success.

Team-building exercises are a fantastic way for teams to get to know each other better and build trust. In addition, training for any tools the team will use should be conducted in advance to prevent any distractions at the project’s onset.

Preparation is Paramount

Lastly, consideration should be given to any interpersonal or soft skills training that should be included. Incorporating these activities will boost team productivity and enable them to start working on the project immediately rather than spending time figuring things out as they go along. This approach could save weeks on the project timeline.

In summary, highly effective digital transformation teams sink or swim together. They stay engaged, motivated, and focused on achieving their goals. Although each team member may possess distinctive talents, their collective commitment and perseverance unite them. The result is a positive and supportive team culture where everyone feels valued and encouraged to contribute their unique perspectives and insights.
